earn money walking get into shape

Sweatcoin is an app that can be found on the website sweatco.in, they’re based in London, UK and they’ve been around since 2015. They basically let people download their app onto their iPhone or Android phone which tracks how much they walk, the more you move the more sweatcoins you can earn. Sweatcoins can be exchanged for cash or merchandise rewards.

Don’t get too excited though, they severely restrict how much you can actually earn per month, and it isn’t much. If you don’t want to join sites that restricts your earning potential then check out sites like Swagbucks instead.

How The Sweatcoin App REALLY Works

How To Join Sweatcoin?

It appears that anyone can join, you just have to be over 13 years old and have to either have an Android phone, iPhone, or Apple watch to be able to download their app from either the Google Play Store or from iTunes

Then you’ll need to fill out a sign up page with your name and email, once you’ve confirmed all of those then you’ll earn 0.95 “sweatcoins” as a bonus, from there you can get your butt moving immediately to start earning sweatcoins.

Earn Sweatcoins By Walking

earnings today total steps

You earn “sweatcoins” by walking around on your feet, your movement is tracked by your phone’s accelerometer and GPS, every step is monitored and recorded onto the app. For every 1,000 steps you walk/run you will earn about 1 sweatcoin, these sweatcoins can later be redeemed for cash or merchandise rewards.

Quick Tip – You can also earn extra pocket money online by watching videos, playing games, downloading apps, reading emails, clicking ads, and more on these top “get-paid-to” sites.

How Much Are Sweatcoins Worth?

There are a few different rewards you can redeem sweatcoins for including cash via Paypal, iPhones, shoes, and even a expedition trip to a jungle. Basically sweatcoins are worth differently depending on what you redeem them for.

For the Paypal option you can redeem 20,000 sweatcoins for a $1,000 reward. If you do the math then 20 sweat coins = $1.

How Much Can You Earn?

The more you walk the more you can earn… well, up to a certain extent, they do limit you to earning a maximum of 5 sweatcoins per day (150 a month) with a free “mover” account. They do have higher membership levels that require you to pay, but they in turn allow you to earn more sweatcoins per day.

Here are the different membership levels:

  • Shaker – Membership cost is 4.75 sweatcoins per month, this level lets you earn 10 sweatcoins per day (300 a month)
  • Quaker – Membership cost is 20 sweatcoins per month, this level lets you earn 15 sweatcoins per day (450 a month)
  • Breaker – Membership cost is 30 sweatcoins per month, this level lets you earn 20 sweatcoins per day (600 a month)

So as you can see, the absolute maximum number of sweatcoins you can earn per month is only 600. If you do the math then 600 sweatcoins is worth only $30 and will take you 600,000 steps to earn it! How long will it take you to make 600,000 steps? To give you an idea, a typical marathon has around 55,000 steps. So that’s about 10 marathons to earn $30!

If that’s too much exercise for you then I recommend you check out Swagbucks which is an extra income site where you can make money online on your computer and you don’t have to move at all.

How Do You Get Paid?

You can trade in your sweatcoins for cash or merchandise rewards. Currently there are a couple of reward options including:

  • Paypal (20,000 sweatcoins for $1,000)
  • Vivobarefoot (75 sweatcoins for $50 credit)
  • iPhone 8 (20,000 sweatcoins)
  • Borneo Expedition (15,000 seatcoins)

What I dislike most is how high the payout thresholds are. With a free “mover” account you can only earn up to 150 sweatcoins a month maximum, which means it’ll take you 133 months (over 11 years!) to earn enough for that Paypal payment. Even if you upgraded to a “breaker” membership where you can earn 600 sweatcoins max, it’ll still take you YEARS to reach it.

The only reward you can conceivable reach is the Vivobarefoot thing which is basically a shoe store credit, that one only cost 75 sweatcoins which you can attain in probably half a month.

But if you want cash via Paypal then it’s probably going to take you a LONG time. I recommend you check out Swagbucks instead where you can earn money online by taking surveys, watching ads, trying games, visiting websites, clicking ads, and more. Swagbucks pays with Paypal once you’ve earned $25 which only takes a few weeks to achieve.

Sweatcoin App Problems

Limited Earnings

First of all you’re limited to earning only 5 sweatcoins per day as a free member, and this is the equivalent of about $0.25 if you redeemed for cash via Paypal. Even if you upgraded to a paid account you’re still limited to earning 20 sweatcoins per day, so really the absolute most you can earn with Sweatcoin is about $1 per day. But this leads to the next problem which is high payout threshold.

High Payout Threshold

If you want to get cash via Paypal it’s going to take years because you can only redeem for the $1,000 option once you’ve reached 20,000 sweatcoins. I really wish they would lower this amount to something reasonable, like $25 or $50 as you’ll find at other sites like Swagbucks and Inbox Pays. This way people can actually cash out once a month or so without having to wait years!

Not Serious Income

It doesn’t matter how many steps you take, you won’t make a serious part time or full time income doing this. At most you can make $30 a month with a paid “breaker” membership. But with such a high payout threshold of $1,000, it’ll take you almost 3 years to get there and all the work would be for nothing if you gave up before then.

Is Sweatcoin a Legit Opportunity?

I think that sweatcoins is a legit site/app that offers a great incentive for people to get fit and lose weight, but there’s just too many limitations on how much you can earn and the way you get paid. Unless you redeem for the Vivabarefoot shoe store credit, all other rewards currently offered such as the $1,000 via Paypal for 20,000 sweatcoins will take you years to get there.

If you’re looking to make some extra pocket money I’m guess you don’t want to walk years and years to see a payout. That’s why I highly recommend you check out faster payout sites like Swagbucks or my top “get-paid-to” sites where you can earn by taking surveys, doing offers, playing games, watching videos, and more.

These coins are only making you sweat and they are not sweet at all! The earning opportunity is so low that I think it does not even worth to download the app. More importantly, you cannot even cash out your earnings like forever! What pops into my mind is that the idea behind this app is to advertise the shoe store because the other rewarding methods are almost impossible to reach.

Lol yeah I wondered why they make it so much easier to use credits for their shoe store, everything else is near impossible to obtain.

Thanks for writting a detail review on Sweatcoin App. Yes you are absolutely right I cannot walk 600000 steps to earn just $30 and it also has a limit. Swagbucks is a cool website that pay more for doing daily tasks that we already do online. So swagbucks  would be great alternative for earning more.

    • Author - Kent Leung says:

Hey Sanjay, yeah I dont like sites like put a limit on how much you can earn. You can definitely earn more at Swagbucks, but it’s still just a small handful of change every month and not to leave your job over. But with Sweatcoin it is just ridiculous and the money is almost unreachable, so there’s no point in joining if you just want to make some extra money.

Well I certainly like the idea of a work at home app like this getting people out and about to earn money – a wonderful way to get physical activity into your life, but, as you rightly point out…they don’t really pay that much in the long run!

I can see that the maximum you can earn is about $30 a month – but I’m still struggling to see how the app maker makes any sort of money out of this system?

Are there lots of adverts that you have to go through when using the app? There must be some otherwise the app is basically paying out from the creator’s pocket?

    • Author - Kent Leung says:

I think Sweatcoin have a number of investors that pay them. When you download their app and use it they can collect information about you and your exercising habits, this information can be useful to some companies who will buy it from Sweatcoin. But there could be other ways Sweatcoin makes money, I’m not 100% sure.

Sweatcoin definitely is the perfect name for the app I think. You’ll have to sweat a lot to make a coin, and with such a high threshold before you get your money, you’d really have to be a runner who’d be running marathons or training up for it and the like on a constant basis. I’ll have to check out Swagbucks and the other sites you mentioned, maybe they’re a bit better. But Sweatcoin… Not for me.

    • Author - Kent Leung says:

Hey Petra, thanks for sharing your feedback. yeah for the average joe who just goes for a 30 minute walk or run every evening after work, it’s not going to pay much if at all. The low paying nature plus the high payout threshold means you likely won’t see any money for years, and if you give up on Sweatcoin halfway through then all the previous effort would have been for nothing (money wise, but you’ll still benefit from the physical exercise!)
