Do you like to meet new people and socialize a lot? If you’re extroverted then you’re gonna love Rent a Friend, it’s a site that lets you earn money by “renting” yourself out to become someone else’s friend/companion. This is like a dream career for people who like to talk, socialize, and meet new people. But is it that simple?
Is Rent a Friend a scam or a legit way to earn for extroverts (or introverts who don’t mind acting like they enjoy being around people for the sake of earning money!)? How do you get paid? How safe is this? I’ll answer all these questions and more in this Rent a Friend review.

Tired of Running Into Scams?
Rent a Friend Review
Name: Rent a Friend
Type: Paid to be a friend
Membership Price: Free
Rent a Friend is a site that started up back in 2009, it is based in New Jersey and is run by a guy name Scott Rosenbaum. Basically it’s a platform that connects people who NEED a friend/companion to those who are willing to rent themselves out for an hourly rate. Obviously if you don’t like people, this will not work.
In this review I’ll be focusing on the making money part of this site. If you don’t like people then you may be more interested in making money online with sites like Swagbucks, Inbox Pays, and Cash Crate instead.
The Details of How Rent a Friend Works
Who Can Sign Up?
Anyone can sign up regardless of what country you’re from, and membership is free. Well, free if you’re looking to make money, but for those looking to hire friends you’ll have to pay $24.95 for membership. But in this review I’ll just focus on the making money aspect of Rent a Friend.
You can register for a free account either with your email or Facebook/Twitter account.
Setting Up Your Profile
Once you joined you can log in and set up your profile, you’ll have to answer some general descriptions about yourself like age, gender, ethnicity, what you look like, what activities you’ll be available for (movies, restaurants, hanging out, prom date, etc). Then lastly you’ll need to write a few sentences about yourself.
Your profile is important because that’s your “about me” page. People looking to hire friends can filter their results by things like age, gender, sexual orientation, etc. so the more accurate you fill your profile the less potential problems there will be.
You’ll also have to upload a picture of yourself. If you provided a phone number you’ll also have to verify it. The phone number is how people will contact you, but you can choose to be contact via email instead.
Earning Money – Renting Yourself Out As a “Friend”
After your profile and everything else is set up correctly and submitted, your profile will be live on the Rent a Friend platform within about an hour. Then you’ll have to play the waiting game, people will be able to find your profile and if they like what they see then they will contact you via the methods you chose.
Why Do People Hire “Friends”?
People hire friends/companions for a variety of reasons. For example they may want them to show them around a new city they just moved to. But as a “friend” you can expect to do common activities you may do with your real life friends like hanging out, going to movies, going shopping, clubbing, parties, concerts, etc. But this is NOT a dating service, and “friend” means platonic!
If you don’t like to meet people face to face you can also have to option to become a “phone friend” or a pen pal where you guys email each other.
See some examples of activities you may want to do with your friend:
How Much Can You Make?
You can make anywhere from $10-$50 per hour, you are your own boss and get to choose what you charge. You can also opt to state that your hourly rate is negotiable on a client-by-client basis.
But honestly don’t expect to make a full time living doing this. At best this is an extra income opportunity and you won’t get rich doing this. The problem is unless you’re a hot and sexy 22 year old college girl, you most likely won’t get many people contacting you for a friend date.
If you’d like more ways to earn then I recommend you check out these top “get-paid-to” sites where you can earn money online by doing various tasks like taking surveys, clicking ads, reading emails, and more.
How Do You Get Paid?
Rent a Friend doesn’t pay you or handle any of the financial transactions, the “friend” you meet is who will be paying you. Well, that can get awkward kind of quick: “Hi, nice to meet you! btw here’s your $50 for pretending to be my friend today…” lol
Rent a Friend Safety Guidelines
Obviously since anyone can sign up and use this Rent a Friend platform, you’ll have to be careful about safety issues. Rent a Friend does not screen or do background criminal checks on anyone, you’ll have to follow some basic safety precautions regardless of whether you’re a friend for hire or those looking to hire friends. Here are some safety guidelines recommended by Rent a Friend:
- Meet at a public place with lots of people, for example a mall, a restaurant, a movie theater, etc.
- Always bring a phone with you, or at least have money for a phone call
- Notify your family/friends of where you’re going to meet this friend and what time you’re coming back
- You can go drinking, but don’t get too drunk
- Say no and leave if anything is making you uncomfortable, you’re not obligated to stick around
Rent a Friend – The Positives
It’s Free To Join
It’s free for those looking to make money, and membership is opened worldwide to anyone
Rent a Friend has a good reputation, they have even been featured on News channels like ABC, MSNBC, CNN, Fox, CW News, and a few others. This is good reassurance for those always looking for the “as seen on TV” labels.
Be Your Own Boss
As a friend for hire you can work whenever you want and even set your own hourly rate. But keep in mind that the higher your hourly rate the less likely you’ll be contacted. You can charge $50/hr if you want, but that doesn’t mean you’ll get business!
Rent a Friend – The Negatives
It’s a Jungle Out There
You might have horrible experiences. It’s a jungle out there and all kinds of people exist, you never know what you’re going to get! Especially women who have to be more cautious. But just follow the safety guidelines of Rent a Friend and you’ll avoid most problems
If you’re a very beautiful and sexy young woman, you will without a doubt attract a lot more attention. This is a double edged sword, because although you’ll get lots of earning opportunities, some people may not understand that “friend” means platonic and that this is not a date. So you may have creepy males who are looking for sex.
People With Fake Pictures/Info
Some people may lie on their profile, or put up a fake picture. It’s kind of like online dating, if you’re a man looking for a cutie pie you won’t realize that it’s actually cutie GUY until you meet in person
Just Extra Income
Rent a Friend is just extra income opportunity and not a way to quit your day job. If you’re looking to make a few quick bucks then I recommend you also look into sites like Swagbucks, Inbox Pays, and Cash Crate where you can earn cash by doing easy online tasks.
Is Rent a Friend a Scam?
From my research it appears that Rent a Friend is completely legit, but you may still run into assholes or creeps out there. Rent a Friend does not screen or do background checks on people, so if you’re unlucky you may get some rotten people with malicious intentions. But if you follow Rent a Friend’s safety guidelines then you’ll be fine most of the time.
If you want to make extra cash but don’t like meeting new people, then check out these extra income sites instead. They’re what I currently use to make money online. You won’t make $50/hr but you can earn wherever and whenever you want, and there’s no human interactions needed.
