Prolific Academic is a survey panel that connects people like you and me to market research companies who are willing to pay you real money for taking their surveys.
Many survey sites out there are a complete waste of time, so I decided to do some research on them to see if Prolific Academic is another time waster or if they’re the best survey site ever.
Is Prolific Academic worth your time? How many surveys can you get? How much can you make? How do they pay you? I highly recommend you read this Prolific Academic review all the way before joining, you’ve been warned!
If you like earning extra income online also check out “get-paid-to” sites like Swagbucks where you can earn by taking surveys, completing offers, playing games, watching videos, and more.

What Is Prolific Academic?
Prolific Academic found at prolific.ac is a survey site that pays people to take their surveys. These surveys are provided by market research companies who are looking to collect your opinions as data for their studies and are willing to pay you for it.
They’re based in Oxford England and are owned and operated by Prolific Academic Ltd. When you join as a participant you get the opportunity to give your thoughts and opinions on different topics and earn cash doing it.
How To Join Prolific Academic?
You don’t need to be from Oxford England to participate, Prolific accepts participants from all countries around the world. It’s free to join and all you have to do is fill out a simple sign up form with your name, email, and password.
You’ll also be asked if you’re signing up to “recruit participants” or to “take part in studies”. Just pick the latter one if you’re looking to earn money taking surveys.
Then they’ll ask you to confirm your email and phone number, after this you’ll also need to complete a profile questionnaire with about 100 questions which basically asks you about your lifestyle, hobbies, habits, etc.
The questionnaire is unpaid for your time, but filling it out is important because it lets them know more about you so they can send you the appropriate surveys according to your demographic.
After filling out your profile questionnaire you’ll be notified in the “Studies” section if any surveys are available for you to take.
When you log in to Prolific you have to go check the “Studies” section to see if there are any surveys offered to you to take.
If there is an available survey you will see all the details about it such as what the survey is about, how much it pays, average completion time, and the number of spaces left in the survey.
Typically surveys pay around £0.50 to £3 and takes 5 to 25 minutes to complete. If you don’t see any available surveys you can just check back periodically throughout the day.
Personally I didn’t get offered any surveys and it was a bummer, but maybe you’ll have more luck.
Refer a Participant
Prolific Academic pays you to refer other people to join. They give you a personal referral link to promote on your website, social media, blog, email, etc. Whoever joins under your link becomes your referral and you can earn 10% of whatever their first cash out is. So if they cash out £10 then you get £1.
In my opinion this is a not a generous referral program because it appears that you only get paid once when your referral make first cash out, but you don’t earn anything on their subsequent cash outs. This sucks compare to other sites like Swagbucks where they pay you 10% of your referrals earnings for life.
Monthly Earning Potential
Most surveys pay £0.50 to £3 and take about 5 to 20 minutes to complete, this would translate to about £6 per hour approximately. This is okay and is about minimum wage, but the problem here is that you won’t get many survey opportunities.
How many surveys offered to you and ultimately how much you earn per month depends on your country, job, income, hobbies, and a bunch of other factors. If lots of companies are seeking your demographic for a study, then you may get more opportunities.
Personally I haven’t received even a single survey since joining. Even if I receive a paid survey once a week, I’d only be make maybe about £2 to £10 per month, just enough to pay for a cup of coffee and maybe a sandwich at Starbucks.
Although some people may get more survey offers, from my research and personal experience you shouldn’t expect to make more than $25 to $50 per month at most with survey sites and other similar things. These sites are meant as “beer money” sites only, nobody makes a full time income off of them.
If extra pocket cash is all you’re looking for then also consider checking out Swagbucks which is a “get-paid-to” site that pays you to take surveys, watch videos, play games, browse the web, and much more.
How Do You Get Paid?
Currently the only way to get paid is with Paypal, this is good because they’re a fast and reliable way to get your money.
You just need to make sure you link your Paypal account in your Prolific’s account section. Once you’ve earned at least £5 you can request a payment. Prolific pays out twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Once they’ve sent payment you’ll receive your money in a couple of days minus 2.9% + 20p for the Paypal fees.
- Free to join as a participant
- Anyone from around the world can join
- Earn cash directly, not points or lame sweepstakes draws
- Pays with Paypal with low minimum threshold
- Very little surveys opportunities, depending on your country and demographic
- Only a small extra income at best
- No other way to earn besides surveys
- Stingy referral program that only pays you one time
- Cash out fees
Is Prolific Academic Worth Your Time?
From my own experience this particular survey panel didn’t work out very well for me as I didn’t even get offered a single survey upon joining, but it doesn’t mean you’ll have the same bad experience.
In my research I did find some people saying they’ve earned real money on their first day, so maybe you’ll have better luck than I did. Survey panels work differently for different people, how many surveys you receive and qualify for depends a lot on your demographics and what country you’re located in.
Make Money Doing This Instead!
If you’ve had bad experience with survey sites before then I highly recommend you try “get-paid-to” sites like Swagbucks instead. They pay you to do easy activities like browsing the web, clicking ads, completing offers, watching videos, playing games, and more.
Like the idea of making money online by watching videos and playing games? Well, don’t get TOO excited because these things don’t pay very much. Don’t expect to make more than $25 to $50 a month on these survey and get-paid-to sites.
If you’re seeking a more substantial source of income then I suggest you check out my Top Work At Home Recommendation instead where I’ll show you how to earn at least $1000+ per month by blogging full time for yourself.
