Blogging Intro – What Is It and How To Start?

Blogging is where you write on a blog, which is your own little website on the internet, think of it as a digital journal. It can be just about anything. Some people focus on only a few narrow topics, while others blog about random different things.

You can blog however you like, but if you want to make money then there is a certain right way and wrong way of doing it.

Getting started is easy, these days anyone can create a blog in a matter of clicks. The only thing you need to start blogging is just a website, which only requires a registered domain and monthly hosting.

Registering a domain name costs about $13 but it’s good for the whole year. Cheap monthly hosting can cost as little as $10 a month, but the cheap ones may not be so secure.

My #1 secret tip will show you where to get top-notch website hosting, private domain registration, as well as free SSL certificates which typically comes at an extra charge. There’s lots more my #1 secret tip can show you, but let’s not jump too far ahead for now, so let’s keep rolling…

2 Main Reasons Why Bloggers Fail & Quit

There’s many reasons bloggers fail and quit, but I’m going to talk about the top 2 reasons. Many bloggers don’t really learn about how to blog, they just go about doing their own thing, and so many mistakes are made without them even realizing what they did wrong. So here are the top 2 reasons why blogs fail:

1. They Aren’t Getting Enough Visitors

The more traffic (visitors) your blog has, the more opportunities for you to make money. More website visitors = more money, and vice versa.

Your visitors come from search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing…etc. The problem with new bloggers is that they don’t understand how to rank high in Google, and so they may be getting close to no traffic.

If you don’t know what ranking means, it’s basically what page your website appears on in the search results. First page is where most people click, and so to get visitors you need your content to rank there. Who’s gonna read it if it’s on the 99th page? Nobody flips back that far, and so if that’s where your content is then you won’t get any traffic.

So how do you rank high in Google?

You can’t just start a new blog and expect your content to go to first page, it doesn’t work like that. It takes time for Google to trust your website because it’s new, it can take at least 3-6 months for Google to start ranking your content.

I started my first blog in December 2016, and for a long 6-7 months absolutely nothing happened and my content wasn’t ranked and I wasn’t getting any visitors. It felt as if nothing was happening and it was so frustrating!

But eventually things started to happen, I got more and more traffic (visitors), and this started happening around the 6-7 month mark. Here is a screenshot of illustrating this:

google analytics traffic increase graph

The key was to continue working on my blog instead of giving up. Google needs time to trust your site, so just work hard and keep writing content and building your blog, eventually Google will see this and start trusting you and giving you higher rankings.

It took about 6-7 months before my number of visitors started to really grow. Right now I’m getting about 100 daily visitors to my blog, but this is still a pretty low number compared to many other blogs out there.

Many blogs fail because people don’t understand the process, they expect it to be quick and don’t have any patience. So if they don’t see anything happening in a few weeks, they quit. But I didn’t quit, I kept on building my blog and I’m now getting 100 daily visitors and that number continues to grow.

2. They Aren’t Making Any Money

Another common reason bloggers fail and quit is because they aren’t making any money, or maybe they’re make a little but they expected much more. This can be frustrating as you feel like you’re just working for nothing, so why keep wasting time and effort into it? So they end up quitting.

As mentioned in reason #1, it takes at least 3-6 months for a blog to gain trust from Google, and so after 6 months you may only START to get visitors and start making money. It may then take another 6 months for that income to grow to anything worth talking about. So all-in-all this process takes a year or more.

Oftentimes you’ll start making let’s say $20 a month after blogging for 10 months, then you give up thinking it’s not worth it. But then those who continue on will have a breakthrough at some point, and 16 months later they’re making $500 a month, and another 6 months later they’re making $3000, and so on.

So making a lot of money blogging is definitely possible, but it probably ain’t going to happen in less than 3 months. This way of making money is definitely not for people who are looking to get rich quick.

5 Must-Haves For a Successful Blog:

In order to have a successful blog, there are several key ingredients that you must have. I will give you 6 of the most important ingredients for success, these are all majorly important, missing just one of these can drastically impact your blog’s profitability.

  1. Content – The more content you have the more keywords you can rank for, and thus the more visitors you can get. Content is probably the #1 most important thing. Having good content means it’s long, helpful, and engaging with the audience. I go for at least 1,000 words every post, it has been said that Google loves lots of content, so the more you feed Google with new content the more rankings you will receive.
  2. Keywords – It’s very important you know what keywords to use for your title and within the post. If you’re using keywords that are used by 1000’s of other blogs, then there will be lots of competition and guess where a new blog like yours will be? That’s right, at the very back where nobody will read it. So it’s a good idea to write posts using keywords with high # of searches yet has low competition.
  3. Consistency – Google likes blogs that regularly publish new content, so in order to please Google and get rankings you must write on your blog consistently. In Google’s eyes it’s better to publish 1 post a week every week, than to not write anything for 3 months then suddenly publish 15 posts. If you stop publishing for long periods of time, your site’s rankings will drop, and so will your number of visitors and ultimately blog’s income.
  4. Monetization – Obviously once you get a lot of website visitors you must have a way to earn money from them. I currently monetize my blogs using affiliate marketing and Google Adsense, these 2 options are popular but there’s other ways too such as selling your own product.
  5. Persistence – You must have persistence in this game because oftentimes the results don’t come quick. It usually takes 3-6 months to start seeing your first dollar, then another 6 months to really get to the point of making some real money. Many people quit when success was just right around the corner!

I’m really glad that you touched base on the reality of things within this space instead of just being flashy about it. It definitely takes time and effort more than people think (like most worth it things) and the benefits will be able to be reaped in the long run. I can attest to all of this and certainly share your love for Wealthy Affiliate. Great article!

Hey Ryan, I only recommend things I have tried myself and trust to be legit on this blog. Wealthy Affiliate is definitely a good investment of your time, energy, and money. I’ve been a member for almost 2 years now and I ain’t going anywhere, there is a reason myself and many other people have stayed for many years. It is truly a gem among so many scams out there.

  2. Ngozi Ijomah says:

I published on my blog and on Twitter, I have been blogging for 6 months now and I’m only getting around 120 visitors a month. Please tell me how to get more traffic!!

    • Author - Kent Leung says:

Hi Ngozi, how much content do you have? The more published posts you have on your blog the more keywords you can rank for on google and the more traffic you will see accordingly. Also it takes time for google to trust your site and give you good rankings. So the best way to get more traffic to your site is to publish consistently (I publish everyday) and write unique helpful content of at least 800 words (but don’t make every post the same length.)

There’s also a bunch of other stuff that can help with your rankings such as meta titles and descriptions, using proper keywords in your titles and content itself, social media presence, content structuring, and some other things. There’s too many things for me to explain in one comment.

I highly recommend you check out Wealthy Affiliate to learn how to build a profitable blog the right way.
