Quick Summary

CastingWords is a platform that offers transcription services to companies, businesses, or basically anyone who needs their audio transcribed. They’re also a platform for transcribers who are looking to work and make money.

In the “freelancers” section on their website it takes you to the CastingWords Workshop, this is the page you go to if you’re looking to earn money as a transcriber.

They’re 100% legit, I’ve actually made a few bucks doing this and already been by them via PayPal. (Payment screenshot later on)

However, you wouldn’t be able to do this for a living because the pay is ridiculously low and the work is actually pretty damn repetitive and boring. At most you’re looking at making $1 to $5 per hour, more likely on the lower end  for most people.

In summary, yes CastingWords Workshop is legit, they do pay, and they can be a reliable source of extra income. But the work is hard, boring, low pay, and you’re better off making money on These Top “Get-Paid-To” Sites instead where the jobs are more fun.

What Is Transcription?

Transcription is basically a process where you take an audio clip and turn it into a transcript by typing down what you hear.

Transcription work is relatively simple to do, generally the faster you can type the more money you can earn.

Who Can Become a Transcriber?

Almost anyone from around the world can join and become a transcriber.

CastingWords have a list of supported countries, you can sign up to become a worker as long as you’re in one of those countries. They accept applicants from all the major countries like USA, UK, Australia, and Canada.

You can check out the full list by clicking HERE.

What Equipment Do You Need?

Just your basic computer/laptop and a headset will suffice. However, there are certain tools like a Transcription Foot Pedal that can help you transcribe more efficiently and help you make more money per hour.

When transcribing you will find that often you cannot understand words and have to listen to it over and over again. The pedal allows you to rewind/pause/play with your foot instead of clicking, this way your hand doesn’t have to leave the keyboard.

The pedal saves you a lot of time and can boost productivity and your hourly earn rate. But it’s completely optional and you can still transcribe perfectly fine without it.

Earning Money: How Does It All Work?

Getting Started

CastingWords is different from many other transcription work platforms in that they don’t require you to pass an entrance exam before you can start transcribing. You can pretty much join and start working/earning from day 1.

They do have a Style Guide you’d need to look over before you start working, the guide is a reference on the writing styles and rules that you must follow when transcribing.

Once you’ve signed up for an account and familiarized yourself with the Style Guide, you can immediately start working right away.

Just go to your account’s dashboard and click on “Available Jobs” which will show you a list of jobs that you’re qualified to work on.  The jobs are audio clips with their length and how much you’ll get paid for transcribing it.

all available transcription jobs

Picking a Job

You can pick any job on the list and listen to the audio first to see if you want to work on it. Some audio have really low quality and is a pain in the ass to even try transcribing it, I’d skip those ones and find audio that is clear and are of high quality.

Although keep in mind that sometimes lower quality audio tend to be higher paying, but personally I’d rather not deal with the stress and frustration of having to replay a short clip many times just to understand it.

Once you find one of the list you want to work on, just click on the button that says “Work On This” and you will be given several hours to work on it. The length of time you’re given to work on a job depends on the length of the audio that needs transcribing.

How Much Can You Earn?

The short answer is not much, especially if you live in a first world country. This is a very low paying gig and you’ll be making well below minimum wage.

They pay by audio minute, and it’s typically around $0.20, this means you’ll make $0.20 for every minute of audio you transcribed, which translate to about $12 per audio hour.

This does NOT mean you’ll make $12/hr!

It typically takes several hours to transcribe an hour long audio, which means you’re likely only going to be making $3 or $5 an hour at most. Your earning potential also depends on your typing speed, your accuracy, and how well you’re able to transcribe without any mistakes.

You can earn about the same amount of money on These Top “Get-Paid-To” Sites which offers paid tasks that are a lot more fun to do like watching ads, playing games, taking surveys, and more. I recommend you try those sites instead of doing boring transcription work!

Their Grading/Feedback System

Once you’ve completed a job and submitted it, your work will be edited and reviewed by editors who are other workers on the platform who have higher rank with more experience.

The editor will go over and double check your transcribed material for any errors and mistakes, your work will then be graded from 1-9. You get paid if your grade fall anywhere between 5-9, anything below a 5 means your work is too poor and cannot be used in any way, and so you won’t get paid.

You get paid a base reward starting at 5, then from each point up you will receive more pay. It goes something like this:

  • 1-4: No pay
  • 5: Only the base reward
  • 6: 1.5x  the base reward
  • 7: 2x the base reward
  • 8: 2.5x the base reward
  • 9: 3x the base reward

Example: if a job offers a base reward of $1 and your work was given a grade of 7, you will earn $2.

You don’t need to be a perfect transcriber to make money, but the more accurate you are the more you can earn.

This is why it’s important to go over their Style Guide to understand how to do it right. It’s not only important to transcribe the audio accurately, but also adhere to the style and format of CastingWords.

Quick Tip: If this all sounds too complicated and boring, then I recommend you check out These Top “Get-Paid-To” Sites instead where you can earn a small extra income by doing fun tasks like playing games, watching videos, taking surveys, and more.

How Do You Get Paid?

CastingWords pay via Paypal every Friday at 10AM Pacific, and the minimum payout threshold is only $1.

If you have less than $1 they will still send it to you via Paypal on the last day of the year, so you’ll get paid no matter what. They’re definitely not interested in keeping money from you!

Personally I only did a couple of jobs and earned a measly $1.10 in total, but I got my money right on time, and I give CastingWords a lot of credit for making the payout process so smooth.

Here’s a screenshot that shows my total paid earnings at CastingWords Workshop:

Who Can Benefit From CastingWords WorkShop?

Anyone who is desperate and looking to earn some quick money. The best thing about CastingWords Workshop is that they pay every single week and the minimum threshold is only $1.

So if for whatever reason you desperately need $5 or $10 to your PayPal account then it’s easy to just log in and start transcribing a bunch of audio, you could make $10 in maybe 2-3 hours, and get paid on Friday.

If you’re thinking about making this your full time job then I’d highly advise against it. At most you might be able to make a few hundred bucks if you devote all your time to it, which is still only a small part time income.

I think some people do try to make this their part time job. If you look at CastingWords Workshop’s top 10 weekly leader board you’ll see that the top guy this week completed 63 jobs.

weekly top 10 leader board

If we assume each job pays an average of $1 then he’s making like $63 every week, which is about $252 per month. But keep in mind that’s the TOP guy out of the entire freaking site.

Most people are making like way less than $252 a month.

If you’re looking for a $1000+ per month income opportunity I highly recommend that you check out my Top Work At Home Recommendation instead.

Final Verdict: Scam Or Legit?

They are definitely not a scam, they offer real transcription work to freelancers looking for work and they pay their workers promptly. Although the pay is terrible and a big waste of time, there are much better ways to make money online which I’ll share with you later in this post.

I only did a few jobs and that $1.10 in the screen shot above took me almost 3 hours! I knew this was a time waster and there had to be better things out there, that’s why after I made that $1.10 I quickly moved on in search for a more lucrative opportunity.

If a small extra income is okay with you then I recommend you join These Top “Get-Paid-To” Sites  instead. Earning potential is around the same, but at least you’ll be doing tasks that are more fun to do like signing up for websites, playing games, watching videos, shopping, and more.

Although CastingWords is legit, I highly do not recommend that you waste your time earning such low wages, your time is worth way more than that and there are opportunities out there that allows you to make some real money online which I’m going to show you below.

Make More Money Doing This Instead

In December of 2016 I found an online training platform called Wealthy Affiliate that completely changed the direction of my life.

Wealthy Affiliate teaches people on how to build a successful online blogging business from the ground up.

The strategy they teach to make money is called Affiliate Marketing and it’s a business model that simply works, many people actually make a full time living doing this.

Under the teachings of this online training platform I’ve managed to build 2 blogs which I currently earn a consistent monthly income from. Although I’m not full time yet, I do see progress and income growth to my business every month.

If you want to follow in my footsteps then check out the link below:

The good news is that this business model is extremely well suited for the complete beginner, it’s easy to learn, requires very little startup costs, and the money you can earn is only limited by the amount of effort you’re willing to put in.

The bad news is that this is a real business, and as such requires a lot of time and effort to build.

But I’ve learned that it’s well worth it to invest in new skills and knowledge. Just like in the real world, to get better paying jobs you’d need to invest in higher education and upgrading yourself.

If you have any questions or comments about CastingWords Workshop or anything else I’ve covered in this post, just write them down in the box below. I always reply to every comment!

I have tried transcription jobs before and had some bad encounters with it. Since I am not from the US, passing the test is really hard even if you know you’ve done everything right. The website stated that even non US residents are free to join. There was a time that I even compared my test transcription from a hacked answer, it did matched but I got a notification that I didn’t pass. So I took an advice from youtube to use vpn, and yes it worked.

It doesn’t end there. One problem of transcribers are the bad ratings of editors. No matter how good you are, they will still give you unacceptable grade so (maybe) you won’t get a high pay. The worst part is that they can kick you out after a few months by giving you bad grades when in fact you are fairly doing great since you started. I guess they don’t want anyone to last in the company.

Yes, it’s not a scam, but it’s not a good choice. Thank you for this thorough review on Casting words. I hope these transcribing companies will provide a better solution on their problematic areas.

Yeah I never stayed on these transcription sites for too long, but the fact that members can grade each other does seem like it could become problematic. There could be old timers who don’t want newbies to move up the ranks and deliberately give them bad grades for unfair reasons, some people are selfish like that.

I think castingWords can be a good side hustle to help one make some extra cash. And I really like the fact that they do accept any one based on their guidelines. The other transcription platforms have very hard to pass test, I tried them many times unsuccessfully. So, I may try castingWords, because I really like transcription job.

Can I find transcription in other languages than English? Or is it only for the English speaking countries.

This is a very nice review.

    Thanks for sharing

    • Author - Kent Leung says:

Yeah all their jobs are in English only. Anyone can join though, you don’t have to be from an English speaking country. As long as you can transcribe in English then you can be a transcriber.

Thanks so much for the training guide. I love transcribing a lot but sometimes it can be a little bit frustrating especially if the earnings are not worth the stress,a friend once told me about castingwords, I was planning of giving it a trial because I work on fiverr also as a transcriber but from your experience spending over 3 hours for a token can be so annoying. I love there platform but I feel they should work more on there earnings. Nice write up and thanks for the eye opening post.

    • Author - Kent Leung says:

I think its better to work more for less instead of the opposite. Transcription is boring and low paying, unless you’re desperate to make a few quick bucks I wouldn’t bother. Thanks for your reading and commenting.

  4. Dapoach says:

I have been long looking for a somewhat easy way to earn money. I think i have eventually gotten the solution from your review about CastingWords Workshop where i can be transcribing audio into words as that seem to be quite easy. Though your rating for CastingWords Workshop is quite low, but i still feel i should give it a try moreover there minimum payout threshold is only $1 which is very good. Thanks for this article. i have saved it already.

    • Author - Kent Leung says:

Yeah don’t let my low rating of Casting Words retract you from joining them, they are indeed an easy way to earn money online if you’re a good English speaker and can type fast. But then again also a tough way to earn money online because even fast typers make less than minimum wage.

I do agree that the $1 minimum payout is very attractive to people who just wants to make a few quick bucks.

  5. GVporras says:

Thank you for sharing this great review about casting words, this work look interesting but really hard to make money into it especially like me I’m very slow in typing, I think it will take a long time to transcribe a song, this for people who’s good on typing and have a really good hearing. But I love to play games and I will check cash Crate maybe I can make some cash.

    • Author - Kent Leung says:

Yeah this type of work is low paying even for people who can type fast and listen well, if you’re a slow typer then you’ll be lucky to make even $1 per hour, which is a waste of time. Good luck at Cash Crate!

  6. Matiss says:

    Hey, Kent!

    Loved the review, thank you!

I do believe this poses a reliable way for people in making some money online. Because if your work is at least somewhat of a quality you will get paid. Obviously, for some, it might be a complete waste of time as for them there are other reliable ways to earn a steady income.

Ultimately, I do agree that the program largely is a waste of time. But it really depends on how desperate you are. Because if one has some savvy typing skills, it can make a difference.

Either way, thank you for all the insights.

Cheers and have a Great One!

    Matiss

    • Author - Kent Leung says:

Hey Matiss, yeah I agree that it’s a reliable source of TINY income for those who are desperate enough to do it, but there are much better ways to make money online. Thanks for chiming in!

  7. Alblue says:

I once registered for online transcription job and try to do their test, but I dropped it because they won’t accept anyone whose base outside US and Europe (forgot the site). Is castingword provide job for english user and audio only?

I am also interested to get paid while playing game. Kind of online game tester. Any recommendation for website that pay you for playing games? Thank you.

    • Author - Kent Leung says:

Casting Words accept people from around the world and there’s no test to get started, so no worries there. But yeah they only provide jobs in English.

If you’re interested in getting paid to play games then I recommend you see Swagbucks which is a “get-paid-to” site that pays you for a variety of online activities, including playing games. It’s very low paying, but they are legit and I have been paid by them many times so I know you will too.

  8. Cathy Cavarzan says:

I am so glad to at least see this is not a scam website. I am also pleased to see that their payments seem to be smooth and no headache cashing out. Really disappointed however to see how low they pay, for freelance work you can definately make much more at other places. I have used fivver in the past for transcription work, What are your thoughts on fivver ?A waste of time or worth it?

    • Author - Kent Leung says:

I tried Fiverr and other similar freelance platforms before, but I was never able to get any work on there. Nobody ever buys my gigs offered, so I don’t know how people actually succeed doing it.

You have so much competition on these platforms from people who have been doing it for a long time and have 1000s of positive ratings already. If you’re new then you’ll have zero rating, and customers would be much more likely to buy those other people’s gigs over yours.

Why would they trust a worker who have zero rating and just starting out versus someone who have 1000s of high ratings and reviews? Plus, if you’re a newbie then your gigs would only show up in the search results for a small amount of time, then it’s overshadowed by the more popular ones. It’s a mystery to me how people (newbies) manage to get gigs in the first place.
