Can You Make Money With Online Surveys? Are They a Scam?

getting paid answering survey questions

Online surveys are a very popular thing these days, and they have been for at least a decade now. These are sites who claim to pay you $25 for example to complete a 30 minute survey. You’ve surely come across something like that, right? $50 an hour filling out surveys? I’m in! Is it that easy though?

I’ve been there. Because my dream has always been to quit my day job and become my own boss making a living from the internet, the idea that all I had to do was click buttons all day for good money was just too good to be true. Long story short, I finally learned that online surveys are a giant waste of time, and I definitely do not recommend you do it.

Can you make money with online surveys?

You can… online surveys are actually not a scam, a lot of companies actually do pay real money for you to complete surveys. So why did I say it’s a giant waste of time? Well, there are a couple of problems I’d like to address about online surveys.

Problem #1: You’ll Rarely Qualify

The way online surveys work is that you’ll be given a screening survey first to see if you qualify for the main survey that you’ll actually be paid for, but you don’t get paid for doing the screening survey. The screening survey usually takes 5-10 minutes and 99% of the time in my experience you won’t qualify, and would have wasted 10 minutes of your life for nothing.

Problem #2: The Pay is Usually Crap

Although many survey companies advertise about paying good money to survey takers, in reality most of the  surveys that you do qualify for are for really low pay. I have done a number of surveys that paid me less than a dollar, and those ones still took me at least 15-20 minutes. So at best I was making maybe $3 an hour, but there’s still yet another problem, let’s take a look at problem #3.

Problem #3: The Cash Out Threshold

The large majority of online survey sites out there will pay you only after you’ve reached a certain payout threshold, usually something like $50. The problem is there’s just not enough work available. For example there was this one survey site I tried several years ago where their selling point was there’s no screening surveys, meaning every survey you’re asked to do was one you actually do qualify for. But the problem was that rarely ever happens. In two months I only received 4 surveys that paid $0.50 each, and their cash out threshold was $25. If you give up before cashing out, that’s hours of your life you’ll never get back.

Conclusion – Are Surveys Worth It?

They’re certainly not worth the time. If you’re someone young who can’t get a job yet and have lots of time to waste, then by all means do it, you’ve got nothing to lose. But word of caution, scams do exist and I’ve fallen for them before so I know from personal experience! Some survey sites will ask you to pay a “membership fee,” promising you all sorts of glory such as having access to super high paying surveys that will never come.

NEVER pay anything to join an online survey site, legit companies are always free to join.

If you’re someone who is serious about making real money online, it will be a big waste of time and it is not worth it. You’ll make $3 an hour in the best case scenario assuming you even get enough qualified surveys to complete to reach the cash out threshold.

A Golden Opportunity

I have since discovered actual legit ways to make money online. Last year I stumbled across a training platform called Wealthy Affiliate, it’s a place where they teach you about building your own online business from scratch.

The business is called affiliate marketing. It’s where you create a blog and you write things about specific topics, and you make money through affiliate links while promoting other people’s products, as well as through advertisements placed on the blog itself.

There are many people on Wealthy Affiliate who started with zero knowledge and within 1-2 years they’re making a full time living, and the best thing about it is that affiliate marketing is a business model that creates passive income, meaning it takes very little work each day to maintain it. The successful people at Wealthy Affiliate are not making $3 an hour doing surveys, they’re making $2000, $5000, or even $10,000 a month, working maybe 15hrs a week.

Sounds too good to be true? Well, it can happen. But it takes a lot of hard work.

Generally speaking for most people it will take at least 1-2 years to start seeing any true income, but once you get it, it’s all passive gravy baby. If you’re someone who wants to quit the day job and work full time from home someday, you cannot afford to miss this golden opportunity. I’ve been a premium member at Wealthy Affiliate for over 10 months now, check out my full no BS review as well as a complete walk-through of what’s offered once you join:
